The advertisement lists 434 tentative vacancies across nine disciplines - Community Development 20, Environment 28, Finance 103, Legal 18, Marketing & Sales 25, Materials Management 44, Personnel & HR 97, Security 31 and Coal Preparation 68. Of these, 358 are fresh and 76 are backlog vacancies, and 44 in total are reserved for PwD candidates. CIL states the vacancy is tentative and may increase or decrease as per requirement.

Each discipline has its own minimum qualification, generally a degree or a two-year post-graduate degree or diploma in the relevant field. Finance requires a qualified CA or ICWA and Security requires a graduate degree plus officer-cadre experience. The upper age limit is 30 years as on 30 September 2024 for General (UR) and EWS candidates, relaxed by 3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), 5 years for SC and ST, and 10, 13 or 15 years for PwD candidates depending on category. Even after relaxation the age on 30 September 2024 must not exceed 56 years. Employees of Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries have no age bar. The advertisement prescribes no minimum age.

General (UR), OBC (both Creamy Layer and Non-Creamy Layer) and EWS candidates pay a non-refundable fee of Rs 1000 plus Rs 180 GST, totalling Rs 1180. SC, ST and PwBD candidates and employees of Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries are exempted. The fee is payable through online mode only and there is no other mode of payment.

Selection is based only on the marks obtained in the Computer Based Online Test and no interview is held. The test runs for 3 hours in one sitting with Paper-I and Paper-II of 100 marks each, 100 multiple-choice questions per paper, 1 mark per question and no penalty for wrong answers; the paper is bilingual in English and Hindi. A candidate must score at least 40 marks (General UR and EWS), 35 marks (OBC Non-Creamy Layer) or 30 marks (SC, ST and PwD) in each paper. Shortlisted candidates then go through Document Verification and an Initial Medical Examination.

Selected candidates are placed as Management Trainee in E-2 grade at an initial basic pay of Rs 50,000 per month during the one-year training period, and on successful completion are regularized in E-3 grade at an initial basic of Rs 60,000, besides Dearness Allowance, HRA and other allowances. Appointed candidates execute a service agreement bond of Rs 3 lakhs and must serve the company for a minimum of 60 months; Rs 5,000 per month is deducted from salary towards bond money and refunded without interest after 60 months.
